West of Loathing — a slapstick comedy stick-figure wild west adventure role-playing game.
West of Loathing is a single-player slapstick comedy adventure role-playing game set in the wild west of the Kingdom of Loathing universe. Traverse snake-infested gulches, punch skeletons wearing cowboy hats, grapple with demon cows, and investigate a wide variety of disgusting spittoons. Talk your way out of trouble as a silver-tongued Snake Oiler, plumb the refried mysteries of the cosmos as a wise and subtle Beanslinger, or let your fists do the talking as a fierce Cow Puncher. Explore a vast open world and encounter a colorful cast of characters, some of whom are good, many of whom are bad, and a few of whom are ugly.
Features:. A sprawling open world, chock full of danger, quests, puzzles, and mysteries. Lush hand-drawn black and white graphics. Thousands of jokes, gags, and goofs.
Crunchy turn-based combat (but only if you want it). Liberal use of the Oxford comma.
Over 50 hats. Disreputable saloons. Several gulches. A drunk horse. Disclaimer.

Graphics – 4/5Deliberately primitive, plain and loose, this game is drawn well for its style. It’s hard to notice at a glance, but it’s pseudo 3D: at least, the character has more freedom to move than it seems.
Its childish drawing fits perfectly into its ironical setting of a fantastic Wild West where “the Cows came home”, and everything went to hell. The music, ironically reinventing House of the Rising Sun and other classics, makes the picture complete. Gameplay – 5/5Who are you? A Cow Puncher, a Snake Oiler, or a Beanslinger?
All these classes are available, and they make sense to the West of Loathing! It’s an alternative Wild West, much wilder than elsewhere. After you select your class, you leave your farm and take off for adventures. Well, you meant “for a decent job”, but adventures never ask whether you’re ready; they just start. So you are here to meet the local SHERF, to defeat goblins and gangsters, to fail romances and win hopeless poker games, to buy the most miserable horse you’ve seen, to meet a cactus man, and that’s just the beginning! No mo’ spoilaz, mista, sure!Aside from its humor (if that’s possible), the game is a decent classical RPG with quests and twists. Step by step you learn more and more about this Brooksian West, and the further you go, the better you feel it.

The developers work wonders on the players, making a plain primitive landscape so colorful and vivid with just words. Controls – 5/5Quests (even parody ones like this) don’t experiment with controls. Though this one is keyboard-oriented, you’ll need mostly conventional setup, with WASD to move and Space for another action. Selecting elements is done with a mouse. When some another action becomes available (say, when you choose the reply in a dialogue, or when you approach something you can grab), a hint pops up, telling you what and how you can do with it. Replay Value – 4/5A joke loses its fun when repeated. But the game offers at least three storylines, depending on the class of your character.
Then, it gets branched, so it makes sense to play it anew to see what else it conceals. And, finally, it’s rather long, so when you’re through, you may forget how it started. So you may replay it later. As for visuals, hardly will this style ever seem obsolete. The Bottom LineThis West of Loathing review reflects but a minor share of all that absurd humor you’ll encounter. It’s totally untranslatable, so enjoy the characters’ speech and manners! As unusual as it gets, the game deserves its place in the masterpiece list.
